Through the Anointing of the Sick, the Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. Anointed with blessed oil and accompanied by the prayer of a priest, the sick are given the grace to unite their suffering with Christ's passion, along with strength, peace, and courage to face illness or the frailty of old age.
Who May Receive This Sacrament
Any baptized Catholic who has reached the use of reason and begins to be in danger of death from illness or old age may be anointed. This includes those facing serious surgery, the elderly who have become frail, and the seriously ill — whether at home, in hospital, or in a care facility. The sacrament may be repeated if the person recovers and later falls ill again, or if the illness worsens.
How to Request Anointing
Family members or the parishioner themselves may request the sacrament by contacting the parish office, which will arrange for a priest to visit at home, in hospital, or wherever the sick person is. Where possible, please reach out ahead of a scheduled surgery rather than waiting until the last moment.
